What is GoGet?

GoGet is Australia’s first and largest professional car sharing network. With over 200,000 members and 3,500 vehicles across the country, GoGet helps reduce Australia’s dependence on private car ownership, making our cities more sustainable and happy places to live.

If you’ve seen cars parked on the street, in car parks, or at shopping centres with an orange wing mirror, you’ve seen a GoGet. Instead of owning a car, GoGet members book one of our cars for as little as an hour or as long as a few days.

GoGet’s Mission

Our aim is to provide a reliable, convenient and affordable transport service that:

• Allows people to live car-free,

• Decreases car usage,

• Improves local air quality,

• Removes private cars from local streets,

• Increases patronage for public transport,

• Allows people to lead more active lives.

After 20 years of operation, we think we’ve been successful in our goals so far.

The GoGet Story

The GoGet story begins at the end of 2002, when our co-founders Nic Lowe and Bruce Jeffreys sat down in a Sydney cafe to talk through their traffic troubles. Both agreed it was too difficult to find parking in the their inner city suburb of Newtown, and owning a car should be optional.

So one fine Sunday Nic and Bruce cheekily borrowed a new car and set up a stall at the Newtown Festival – under the name ‘Newtown CarShare’. A few thousand locals were asked if they’d be interested in swapping car ownership for hourly access to a fleet of cars parked nearby. Amid the dust, music and chaos of that hot November day, Nic and Bruce found lots of people could see the benefits.

The pair soon founded CarShare Australia, with the aim of running a viable car sharing service in Australia. Nic and Bruce self-funded the development of the technology to make car sharing as user-friendly as possible for members.

Newtown CarShare was launched on Saturday June 6 2003 with 3 vehicles and 12 members. The next day, Enmore residents Fiona Court and Dale Bartley took the first official car share trip in Australia – a 4 hour shopping trip to Auburn. Following the trial, membership grew steadily with new pods opening in Enmore, Glebe, and Surry Hills.

Following interest from the City of Darebin in Victoria, the service was extended to Melbourne and launched under the new name ‘GoGet’ on November 18, 2004. As Melbourne’s first car share service, GoGet started operations out of a dedicated parking facility provided by the City of Darebin in Westgarth (Northcote).

In May 2005 Newtown CarShare was officially re-launched as GoGet, Australia’s first national car sharing network. GoGet has continued to grow across Australia and is now operating in 5 cities with over 100,000 members.
